Synopsis: The Australian Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) was created in 1948 and the modern scheme aims to provide “timely, reliable and affordable access to necessary medicines”. New optometrical medications are added to the PBS schedule from time to time, and previously included medications can be delisted. Prescribing clinicians must remain up to date with the various eye drops currently included in the PBS schedule, and the restricted prescribing and authority indications for these.

- Have a basic understanding of how much PBS-listed medications will cost for different groups of patients
- Be aware of recent changes to schedule listings of eye drops
- Know which eye drops are available on the PBS schedule for each class of medication
- Know the restricted indications for non-authority eye drops
- Know the authority indications for eye drops requiring streamlined or non-streamlined authority approval
