Professor Chandra Balaratnasingam is a consultant vitreoretinal surgeon, Medical Director of the Lions Eye Institute, and Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Western Australia. He received his medical degree with Honours and PhD with Distinction from the University of Western Australia. Following specialist ophthalmology training in Western Australia, he completed more than three years of post-fellowship subspecialty training in medical and surgical retinal diseases, including 15 months at the University of British Columbia, followed by two years with Vitreous-Retina-Macula Consultants of New York and Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital.
After fellowship, Professor Balaratnasingam was appointed to the clinical faculty at New York University School of Medicine and served as a consultant vitreoretinal surgeon at Bellevue Hospital, before returning to Australia in 2016 to continue his clinical and academic work at the Lions Eye Institute. He has authored more than 150 peer–reviewed publications, contributed 10 textbook chapters on retinal diseases, and leads clinical and laboratory-based research focused on improving the diagnosis and treatment of diabetes-related retinal complications.
