Synopsis: Rapid advances in widefield intraoperative visualisation and microsurgical instrumentation have markedly improved outcomes for patients undergoing vitreoretinal surgery. This lecture will provide an optometrist-focused overview of the key surgical indications for common retinal diseases encountered in primary eye care, with an emphasis on timely referral pathways and preoperative assessment. Contemporary surgical approaches will be reviewed in addition to postoperative care and complication recognition.
